I installed a plugin for the site that integrates a lot of social media features. I was hesitant to do this because of the shit show that was Facebook. I don’t want any of that flavor here, however, I think there are some features that might work out, many are superfluous.

You now have a profile page that looks like a social media page. There’s a profile photo, cover photo, people can see your favorites and friends etc.

There are notifications.

You can create groups and ‘friend’ people and I’m sure there’s other stuff. I haven’t turned some of the feature on and some I may turn off.

You may find that creating a group to discuss some organizational issues might be more enjoyable than a forum.
